Stage Stores (SSI) Reports March Comp Sales Down 15%

Stage Stores, Inc. (NYSE: SSI) reported that its total sales for the five week March period ended April 4, 2009 decreased 11.5% to $124.9 million from $141.1 million in the prior year five week period ended April 5, 2008. Comparable store sales decreased 15.0% this year versus a decrease of 10.3% last year.
For the month, Stage Stores accessories, cosmetics, intimates, misses sportswear and petites categories all performed better than the Company average. With regard to comparable store sales by region of the country, the Northeast and Mid Atlantic were Stage Stores' best performing regions, while the Southeast region was its weakest.
