Shares of Potash (NYSE: POT) are leading the ag sector higher today despite no news from the company. The stock is currently up 6.4% to $82.35 on somewhat-light volume (has traded 10.9 million times, which compares to its average daily volume of about 12 million shares). The Market Vectors Agribusiness ETF (NYSE: MOO), often used as a broader measure of the entire ag sector, is up 2% to $30.05 today.
As the most popular ag name, Potash is usually the most volatile ag stock. Traders may be buying shares of Potash ahead of earnings from Mosaic (NYSE: MOS), another large fertilizer company, which are expected out after the close today. Notably, Citi issued a research report on Mosaic earlier, maintaining a Buy rating but cutting the stock's price target from $86 to $80 ahead of the earnings report.
Back from vacation, Jim Cramer discussed several ag stocks on this afternoon's Stop Trading!. Cramer mentioned Potash and his favorite, Terra Nitrogen (NYSE: TNH), and speculated that today's sector-wide jump could simply be a relief rally due to hedge fund selling which may have finally ended. Cramer loves Terra Nitrogen as it is the ag company that pays the fattest dividend, currently yielding nearly 11%. Shares of Terra Nitrogen most recently traded at $103.52, up 5.2% from Friday's close.
Elsewhere in the sector:
Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan, Inc. engages in the production and sale of fertilizers, and related industrial and feed products in North America.
