Ag Names Rally After MOO Hits 52-Week Low (MON, POT, MOS, more..)

September 11, 2008 2:41 PM EDT
With about two hours left in today's trading session, the ag names seem to be holding onto a nice rally:
  • Monsanto (NYSE: MON) 4.9% higher
  • Potash (NYSE: POT) 5.3% higher
  • Mosaic (NYSE: MOS) 2.7% higher
  • Agrium (NYSE: AGU) 4.6% higher
  • CF Industries (NYSE: CF) 4.6% higher
  • Terra Industries (NYSE: TRA) 3.6% higher
  • Intrepid Potash (NYSE: IPI) 1.7% higher
These moves are notable because ag stocks have been absolutely beaten up recently as commodities and oil have come off their recent highs. To name a few: Potash has fallen more than 13% so far in September and is down more than 35% from its 52-week high set in June (Potash's 52-week was set at $241.62). Mosaic is down 20% in September and off 48% from its 52-week high of $163.25. Monsanto is down only 7% in September, but has fallen more than 27% from its high of $145.80.

A great way to track the ag names such as Potash and Mosaic is through the Market Vectors--Agribusiness (AMEX: MOO) fund, an ETF focused on fertilizer and industrial feed product companies. The MOO hit a new 52-week low today just after the market opened when it fell more than 4% from yesterday's close to $40.42. Since hitting the low, the ETF has surged and is currently trading relatively flat.
