The Google (GOOG) Phone is Coming... Someday
The long-rumored Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) phone is not a myth, and it is coming soon, according to Michael Arrington of Tech Crunch.
Google is looking to continue its expansion into everything tech with a phone that is set to rival Apple’s (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone, as the pure vision of what the company thinks a phone should be.
Few things are certain regarding the phone -- what it looks like or what its specifications will be. However, it is certain that Google is developing its own branded phone that they will sell directly through retailers. It was long-believed that the phone would be ready to be shipped by the holiday season, but now the release has been pushed back to sometime early in 2010.
The phone is expected to be produced by a major phone manufacturer, but will exclusively be branded with the Google name. The manufacturer chosen could see a substantial jump in production. Rumored possible manufacturers include HTC, LG and Samsung, but it is unclear if any of these companies will in fact be Google’s choice.
Google will have every bit of say so in the style and specs of the phone, as the company is making sure that every last piece of the phone is exactly the way a Google phone should be. What that vision is remains completely uncertain. There n the is no information ophone’s size, or if it will utilize a physical keyboard.
The Android 2.0 operating system is already on the Motorola (NYSE: MOT) Droid phone which was released earlier this month, while HTC is planning a new Android device even slimmer than the Droid or iPhone.
A successful entry into the mobile device market by Google will surely effect the market share of RIMM (Nasdaq: RIMM), Apple, Palm (Nasdaq: PALM) and Motorola, among others.
Shares for Google are down 0.70% to $573.46 in mid-day trading.
