British aid shipment leaves Cyprus bound for Gaza pier May 15, 2024 01:13PM

LONDON (Reuters) - A British shipment of nearly 100 tonnes of aid has left Cyprus bound for a new temporary pier in Gaza, the British Foreign Office said in a statement on Wednesday.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT

International organisations have said that Gaza faces a severe humanitarian crisis threatening a population of more than 2 million people.

Fed gets some good news on inflation progress May 15, 2024 01:00PM

(Reuters) - Federal Reserve policymakers waiting to see renewed progress on inflation before reducing borrowing costs got some encouraging data on Wednesday with a government report showing inflation eased a bit in April.    The 3.4% rise in the consumer price index from a year earlier, and the 0.3% increase from March, shows the Fed still has some distance to go before it achieves its 2% target for inflation.

First drop in overdose deaths in 6 years, US preliminary data shows May 15, 2024 12:52PM

(Reuters) - The number of deaths from drug overdose fell 3% to 107,543 in 2023 from the previous year, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released on Wednesday.

States including Nebraska, Kansas, Indiana and Maine saw declines of 15% or more in such deaths, mostly from opioids, while Alaska, Washington and Oregon reported notable increases of at least 27% compared to 2022, the data showed.
