Time Makes Case for Hard Print Magazines Losing Ground

Time Magazine, a unit of Time Warner (NYSE: TWX), named President Barack Obama as its "Person of the Year" for 2012.

This marks the second time that Time has lifted Obama to its PotY level, with the last being in 2008...when Obama won his first presidential election. We can only imagine Apple-like lines forming to grab copies of this issue.

(Make that, Apple-like lines in China.)

Over the last few years, Time has gotten a little more creative with whom (or what) it selects for PotY honors. Actually, it started back in 1993, when time named "The Peacemakers" (no relation to the warhead) as PotY.

2002 saw "The Whistleblowers" as PotY, followed by "The American Soldier" in 2003. "Good Samaritans" made the top in 2005, "You" (us?) was PotY the following year.

Finally, "The Protester" was the selection for 2011 following the financial mess in 2008 and 2009.

Reasoning behind the pick was that Obama won re-election amid higher unemployment and is the first Democrat to win two consecutive terms with over 50 percent of the popular vote. The magazine even compared Obama to FDR (Franklin Delano Roosevelt, history buffs). Notably, FDR pulled the country together following the previous financial debacle (Great Depression) and massive, legendary war (WWII). He also did all that from a wheelchair.

Who did Obama top for the honors? Malala Yousufzai, who was a Pakistani girl shot in the head for being an advocate of girls' education.
