RIM's (RIMM) PlayBook Price, Features Pose Serious Threat to iPad 2 (AAPL)

March 22, 2011 9:07 AM EDT
Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM) is seeing a little pre-market action Tuesday, up about 0.9% ahead of the opening bell, following positive tablet news from the company.

Amid months of speculation and anticipation, RIM said that Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) will begin to take orders for it's Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad competitor, the BlackBerry PlayBook, today. The tablet will be available in "Best Buy stores and Best Buy Mobile stores in the US, as well as Best Buy and Future Shop stores in Canada, on April 19, 2011."

The RIM site has a link to pre-order the tablet on the Best Buy website.

Notably, pricing is not as extreme for the PlayBook as originally anticipated. The tablet starts off at $499.99 for a 16 gigabyte Wi-Fi model, and runs through $699.99 for the 64GB version. This mirrors the pricing spectrum for Apple's iPad 2.

To compare: both contain dual-core processors and both have dual cameras for video conferencing. RIM has its own tablet OS, and Apple has the familiar iOS system. Apple's App Store is packed with variety, though RIM is catching up. The PlayBook supports Adobe (NASDAQ: ADBE) Flash, a web standard, unlike the iPad 2.

Additionally, RIM said that it has secured distribution channels with about 20,000 retailers throughout the U.S. and Canada.
