Nokia (NOK) Drops 4 Spots in Global Smartphone Sales During Q3; Android Continues Dominance

Nokia (NYSE: NOK) shares are higher on the session amid new global smartphone and mobile phone sales data from Gartner issued today.

According to the firm, global mobile phone sales in the third quarter of 2012 fell 3.1 percent to 428 million units. Smartphone sales rose 46.9 percent and now account for about 39.6 percent of all smartphone sales.

Gartner noted that Nokia slipped from 3rd in the second quarter down to 7th in terms of overall smartphone sales. Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM) then moved into the number 3 spot, with HTC occupying the 4th position.

Nokia still sold 82.3 million total mobile phones in the quarter, keeping it in the number 2 sport for overall sales. The number was down from 105.4 million total units sold in the same period last year.

Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) sales rose 36.2 percent to 23.6 million units, putting it firmly in the number three spot.

In terms of operating systems, Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android stole some market share from Apple's iOS, rising from 52.5 percent last year up to 72.4 percent in the most recent quarter. Notably, Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows Phone OS added 0.9 points to its market share, bringing its total to 2.4 percent. Baby steps.
