Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) may really stick it to Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) and Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS) starting as early as the third quarter of 2012.
According to reports out Monday, Apple may be launching a "miniPad" in the latter half of 2012, sized at just 7.85-inches diagonal. China's NetEase said the device might price for $249 or $299, down about $100 from current iPad 2 pricing and $200 from an entry level new iPad.
In addition, Apple is also looking to take the legs out from under the upcoming launch of Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows 8 operating system, which will see new tablet devices appear in the third quarter, more or less on the same day Windows 8 goes on sale.
The new iPad will be able to quickly play and run apps from the original iPad as well as the iPad 2, without developers needing to go back to the drawing board or make significant tweaks like what were needed to port apps onto the new iPad and its Retina Display.
One item investors might be pondering is whether or not a smaller iPad will cannibalize larger iPad sales. Amazon's Kindle Fire and Banes & Noble's NOOK have been selling fairly well as smaller tablets. The appeal of Apple's iPad is its ability to run smoothly with a large, crisp display.
Shares of Apple are indicated higher Monday.
