Apple (AAPL) iOS 8 Currently More Crash-Prone than Predecessor

September 22, 2014 3:35 PM EDT

While Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) has been lauded for its record-breaking iPhone sales last weekend, others have been paying attention to the iOS 8 operating system. And, things there aren't nearly as bright and shiny.

ZDNet said Monday, citing data from Crittercism, that the crash rate for iOS 8 are 78 percent higher than those for iOS 7.

Mainly, the issue is with older devices; Crittercism reported a 3.57 percent rate for the iPhone 4, 4S, 5, and 5s, versus 2.63 percent for the iPhone 6 and 2.11 percent for the iPhone 6 Plus. The total crash rate is 3.56 percent.

For iOS 7, the average crash rate is 2.0 percent.

Apple's iOS 8 software is brand new and its expected that future updates will mitigate crashes. There's also the notion that users with older devices are running older apps, which either haven't been updated are have been abandoned.

Amid the report, it's unlikely that many are holding off on updating to iOS 8. Fiksu has an iOS 8 activation map which has tracked 133.1 million in-app events since launch.
