Disney (DIS) 'Infinity' Video Game Stays Hot With Retailers Into Holiday 2013

September 5, 2013 11:12 AM EDT
Disney's (NYSE: DIS) crack at combining plastic toys and video games is seeing hot sales as we approach the 2013 holiday shopping season.

According to Reuters, retailers like GameStop (NYSE: GME), Wal-mart (NYSE: WMT), Toys 'R' Us (NYSE: VNO), and others are restocking Diney's "Infinity" video game now in order to stay ahead of expected upcoming demand.

"Infinity" launched on August 18th.

The concept of Diney's "Infinity," which is available on PC and gaming consoles, is that kids collect the plastic figures and place them on an electronic platform to transfer images to a connected TV. Those characters are then playable by users in order to create different story lines and experiences. Purchasing "Power Discs" will add special powers to the characters in the virtual game.

Despite having a solid string of hit movies in its lifetime, Disney hasn't been able to create the same magic in the video game realm. Its five-year-old interactive division has reported losses for 14 of the last 15 quarters for a cumulative total of about $1.16 billion.

Should "Infinity" be a hit for Disney, it might open up a whole new revenue stream for the company.

Competing for attention will be Activision Blizzard (Nasdaq: ATVI) with its "Skylanders: Swap Force" game. "Skylanders" has been a popular game for Activision, according to the latest NPD research. But, while "Skylanders" relies on new characters, Disney can fall back on its vast portfolio of fan favorites, not to mention inclusion of popular characters from Pixar films.

Shares of Disney are up 0.5 percent.
