Canaccord Genuity Morning Coffee on Oracle (Nasdaq: ORCL) and Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ): The odd couple.

Oracle will continue to support Hewlett-Packard’s Itanium-based servers after losing a lawsuit which it had argued that it was not obliged to make new versions of database software compatible with the servers. The dispute between the two began when Oracle purchased Sun Microsystems. The purchase of Sun put Oracle into the server hardware field, where it previously partnered with HP. Oracle then said that there was no contract with HP requiring it to continue to support HP’s server based on Intel’s (Nasdaq: INTC) Itanium chips and that it had determined that Itanium was approaching the end of its life. HP took the matter to court, where it was ruled that there had been a contract and that Oracle would be required to continue making software. Oracle’s software for Itanium computers will be released about the same times as its software on IBM’s (NYSE: IBM) power systems.
