Advisers Question Re-Election of Apple's (AAPL) Steve Jobs to Disney (DIS) Board

March 23, 2011 7:46 AM EDT
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) chief executive officer Steve Jobs is facing questions about his ability to remain on the Board of Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS), as two shareholder advisory firms challenge the corporate director's attendance record.

Jobs has been absent from Apple since January, having taken an unexplained medical leave.

Glass Lewis & Co. has recommended to Disney shareholders to withhold support for Jobs, ahead of Disney's annual meeting Wednesday, citing attendance. Institutional Shareholder Services Inc. also said that Jobs' attendance is an issue, but stopped short of recommending a vote against him.

"Jobs' poor attendance in three of the past four years, and recent leave of absence from his primary employer, raises questions about his ability to fulfill his responsibilities as a director of the [Disney] company," ISS wrote in its report.

The firms noted that Jobs attended less than 75 percent of Disney's Board meetings in 2010, marking the third such performance in the last four years.

Jobs is currently Disney's largest shareholder.
