North American Box Office has Record Year Amid String of Blockbusters (CKEC) (MCS) (IMAX)

December 30, 2015 8:26 AM EST

Those that said going to the movies is dead haven't been keeping an eye on box office revenue results this year.

Bloomberg reported late Tuesday that North American (U.S. and Canada) ticket sales rose 7.2 percent this year for total sales of over $11 billion. That compares with the prior record of $10.9 billion set in 2013.

Gains were led by Jurassic World, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Furious 7.

Comcast's (Nasdaq: CMCSA) Universal Pictures and Disney (NYSE: DIS) were the big winners this year, with the two expected to combine for nearly half the revenue this year.

Movie-related stocks on watch Wednesday morning include:

  • AMC Entertainment (NYSE: AMC)
  • Carmike Cinemas (Nasdaq: CKEC)
  • Cinemark Holdings (NYSE: CNK)
  • IMAX Corp. (NYSE: IMAX)
  • Marcus Corporation (NYSE: MCS)
  • Regal Entertainment Group (NYSE: RGC)
  • RealD (NYSE: RLD)
