Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) is bringing its messaging platform to browsers as a standalone service.
Re/code noted Wednesday that Facebook has launched Messenger for browsers. While the service still requires a Facebook account to use, it's a cleaner version of the service without the distractions that might occur with having to log into Facebook itself.
Facebook previously separated its Messenger app from the Facebook app, requiring another download for users. But, the mobile app was improved with features like peer-to-peer payments and a developer platform. Those features may also work their way onto the web version soon.
Shares of Facebook are lower in afternoon trading.
