American Medical Association Calls Obesity A Disease (ARNA) (VVUS)

The American Medical Association (AMA) on Tuesday voted to declare obesity a disease. The AMA's recommendations accompanying the vote included comments urging physicians and insurance companies to recognize obesity as a complex disorder. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Internal Revenue Service already recognize the condition as a disease.

Companies marketing obesity drugs include Arena Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: ARNA), Novartis AG (NYSE: NVS), Orexigen Therapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq: OREX) and VIVUS Inc. (Nasdaq: VVUS).
