Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) shares are up early amid an e-commerce giant taking a direct aim at its recently launched Gifts platform.
Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) said today that it was launching Amazon Birthday Gift. The company describes the initiative as "a new way for customers to surprise friends on their birthdays by joining together to send Amazon.com Gift Cards with birthday messages on Facebook."
To let you know who your real friend are, Amazon said, "Amazon Birthday Gift makes social gift giving easy by allowing a single friend to start a gift by adding a $1, $5, $10 or $25 Amazon.com Gift Card to a birthday message, which won’t appear on the recipient’s Facebook Timeline until his or her birthday. Once a gift is started, any other friends can join in by also contributing Amazon.com Gift Cards."
Along with Facebook Gifts, there's also Wrapp, which allows users to give gift cards to friends.
Despite the competition, Amazon has a good thing going. You get money for Amazon, which has loads-and-loads of different items. Amazon will also benefit as more people will feel guilty if not contributing to the recipients birthday wish, even as little as $1. That's more money to be spent at Amazon.
Whether or not Facebook Gifts is catching on as much as expected hasn't really been revealed yet. Also, expect that other retailers like Wal-mart (NYSE: WMT), Best Buy (NYSE: BBY), Target (NYSE: TGT) and others will soon release their own social network gifting applications soon.
