Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD) is ticking higher following an earlier release detailing its roadmap and strategy in the enterprise data and server segment.
AMD appears to be moving to ARM Holdings (Nasdaq: ARMH)-based technology, distancing itself from a platform it has had in place since the 1980s. The company said that "Seattle" will be the industry's only 64-bit ARM (Nasdaq: ARMH)-based server SoC from a proven server processor supplier.
AMD Server unit general manger Andrew Feldman commented to the WSJ Tuesday morning. Two questions were asked: will ARM make in big in servers and will AMD win with ARM?
Feldman notes massive volumes of ARM-based chips being shipped recently, noting ARM's decades of experience in power efficiency.
On the second point, Feldman believes that computer makers are tired of relying on one supplier (Intel (Nasdaq: INTC)), a company with more-robust margins than the companies it supplies. "I think the largest customers want ARM to win," he quipped.
Shares of AMD are up 1. percent in early trading.
