Arena (ARNA) Slumps as Consumer Reports Says to 'Skip' Belviq

Arena Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: ARNA) shares are lower on Fridays session following a review of its BELVIQ weight-loss drug in Consumer Reports (CR) on Thursday.

Having been available in the U.S. since June 11th, CR noted that its only for the obese with a body-mass at or above 30, or those who are overweight (BMI at 27 - 30) with diabetes.

Research shows that those on the drug could lose between 3.0 percent to 3.7 percent of weight and main gain it back once off the drug. One trial has participants losing 5 percent of weight over 12 months, but gaining a quarter of that back by the end of the second year.

CR comments, "What's more, the drug can cause several side effects including, headache, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, dry mouth, and constipation. If you have diabetes, add hypoglycemia, back pain, and a cough to that list. The drug's label also states that Belviq may cause a slowed heartbeat, heart valve problems, painful erections, and if you take more than is prescribed, hallucinations, euphoria, and slowed thinking."
