Another competitor is gunning for Facebook (Nasdaq: FB). And it might disappear before you even know it's there.
That's the premise behind Snapchat, one of the hottest up-and-coming social trends around. Highlighted in NY Mag today, the platform is becoming the de facto go-to app for Wall Streeters and other executives who want to share a fun image, without the risk of it ending up in the wrong hands.
Users can send photos with messages to others and those photos can disappear as little as one-second after being viewed.
Given the appeal of young up-and-comers to keep a strict social profile, the ability to share crazier events with friends is appealing.
Currently, about 150 million photos are being shared per day, according to the latest metrics.
Is the platform totally safe? No, there are ways to capture an image before it disappears and there is a public leader board.
Still, Snapchat appears to be a more appealing alternative than the likes of Facebook, Twitter, and, certainly, LinkedIn (NYSE: LNKD). People may be on multiple social media platforms, but they generally will veer towards one primary outlet over time.
And that's something investors should be focusing on. Shares of Facebook are up 0.5 percent today following the company's annual shareholders meeting on Tuesday.
