Nokia (NOK) Slumps as Industry Leader Takes Aim at Better Smartphone Photos

June 12, 2013 9:51 AM EDT
Nokia (NYSE: NOK) shares are lower Wednesday as competition is heating up in the one segment many thought wouldn't surface for a while.

On Tuesday, Samsung announced the launch of its Galaxy S4 zoom handset. According to Samsung's press release: "The compact GALAXY S4 zoom’s best-in-class 10x Optical Zoom and 16MP BSI CMOS Sensor lets you capture beautiful images from far away or up close and personal, in all light conditions, without having to carry heavy camera gear around with you."

(Compact might be a little bit of a stretch, particularly after looking at this image.)

News comes as Nokia has been working on next-generation camera technology to implement in upcoming smartphone handsets. One such technology is "computational imaging," a technology with such features as allowing to refocus a shot after the image is captured. The Lytro camera line was the first product to bring it mainstream.

With one of the largest handset makers playing-up its camera quality, Nokia execs and shareholders might start to take notice. Now, if Samsung can only get that into a smaller form factor...

Shares of Nokia are down 0.6 percent.
