Samsung's Tizen Could Become Fifth Largest Smartphone OS by FY17 (GOOG) (AAPL)

Will Samsung's Tizen operating system be a formidable force to compete with the likes of Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) and Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL)? Probably not, but it will gain some mobile market share.

Bloomberg Industries (BI) said today that Tizen might gain around 19.1 million users by 2017, making it the fifth-largest global mobile operating system. The firm comments, "Samsung likely will invest heavily in Tizen through both advertising and the carriers, which should help reduce its dependence on Google's Android OS. Android accounted for 98 percent of Samsung's 1Q smartphone shipments."

Google's Android will remain on top with 1.05 billion users, while Apple iOS will have about 274 million users. Again, these are smartphone numbers, exclusive of tablet sales. CAGR for Google and iOS from 2013 through 2017 is 16.1 percent and 15.0 percent, respectfully.

Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows Phone will boast CAGR of 56.9 percent for total user base of 170.3 million by 2017.

BlackBerry (Nasdaq: BBRY) will maintain a fourth position with 53.9 million users and CAGR of 10.6 percent.

The industry five-year CAGR is estimated at 16.9 percent.
