PC shipments are expected to see CAGR of 9.7 percent from 2013 through 2017, but that doesn't mean all segments will perform equally.
Canalys issued a report showing that PC shipments will hit about 493.1 million units in 2013, moving to 713.8 million by 2017. Desktop shipments should fall from 105 million this year to 85.8 million in four years. Notebook PCs will drop from 205.6 million down to 171.9 million.
Tablets, however, will move from 182.5 million units shipped in 2013 up to a staggering 456.1 million units in 2017, for CAGR of 25.7 percent.
One analyst from Canalys commented, "The reception to Windows 8 has not reinvigorated demand for Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT)-based PCs but there is a glimmer of hope for OEMs with Microsoft’s plan to release Windows 8.1 as a free upgrade. Microsoft will continue to innovate. New versions will come and its OS release cycle will gain speed. But it must address some of the criticisms that have been directed at the OS’s user interface or it risks losing even more ground to iOS and Android in the PC space."
Canalys comtinued, "This new influx of Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android devices will provide a boost to the platform and Canalys therefore expects Android to take a 45 percent share this year, behind Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) at 49 percent. The iPad mini is expected to continue selling well, becoming more significant in terms of the product mix and spawning a further increase in consumer demand for smaller tablets."
