U.S. wireless giants AT&T (NYSE: T), Verizon (NYSE: VZ), and Sprint (NYSE: S) are on watch following an update on a national WiFi initiative.

Cablevision (NYSE: CVC), Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC), Cox Communications, and Bright House Networks announced that the size of it WiFi network collaboration has tripled since launch last year to 150,000 hotspots. The companies said, "When traveling outside their home markets, high-speed Internet subscribers of the participating companies can look for the “CableWiFi” network service set identifier (SSID). Through a simple sign-on process, they can connect to a WiFi access point using the same credentials they use to join their own providers’ WiFi network."

The move might mean less data being accessed via the U.S. carriers' networks, meaning there will be fewer opportunities for carriers to cash in on data overages.

Launch of the massive network was May 2012. For more color and commentary from the release, click here.
