Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM) is confident that Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) next mobile operating system refresh will be a solid gainer and isn't expected to stop support anytime soon.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Qualcomm's marketing chief Anand Chandrasekher said that the company's relationship with Microsoft is "extremely important." He noted that the company will extend support for Microsoft with the Windows RT update (RT 8.1).

Chandrasekher said RT 8.1 was a "bold, new technology" and there are a lot of changes with the user interface (UI). He believes that the tablet market is robust enough to support three platforms (referring to Windows RT, Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android, and Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iOS).

Currently, Qualcomm has over 30 chip designs for Android and Windows tablets, though specifics weren't mentioned.

After closing up 1.98 percent Monday, Microsoft is up again in early trading. Qualcomm is indicated lower.
