Google's (GOOG) Motorola to Manufacture Next Handset in U.S.

May 30, 2013 8:59 AM EDT
Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Motorola Mobility unit will become more American with its next handset.

Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside commented at the AllThingsD D11 Conference on Wednesday that the company's Moto X will be built at a 500,000-square foot facility in Texas. About 2,000 people will be employed to construct the device.

Woodside also noted that he was "pretty confident" that the products would begin shipping next fall.

Motorola will have an advantage versus competitors like Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), Nokia (NYSE: NOK), and BlackBerry (Nasdaq: BBRY) in its ability to manage ultra-low power sensors. Woodside commented that Motorola will be able to sense usage of parts like accelerometers and gyroscopes and power-down components when not in use, thus conserving more battery power.

Engineers have also developed power-saving processors, though nothing else was said to elaborate the comment.

Shares of Google are indicated for a higher open Thursday.
