Royal Caribbean (NYSE: RCL) is lower Tuesday following reports, and eventually confirmation, that one of its ships was on fire.
In a release Monday morning, Royal Caribbean said, "Grandeur of the Seas arrived in Freeport, The Bahamas, this morning at approximately 10:15 a.m. ET. Grandeur of the Seas was en route to CocoCay, The Bahamas, when the ship experienced a fire in the mooring area in the aft of the ship at approximately 2:50 a.m. ET. The fire was extinguished at 4:58 a.m. and the ship was redirected to Freeport for further evaluation.
The release continued, "In an abundance of caution, the Captain deemed it necessary to muster all guests to their assembly stations during the incident. All 2,224 guests and 796 crew have been accounted for, and guests have since been allowed to return to most staterooms and public areas."
Peers are on watch Tuesday as trading gets back underway following a long holiday weekend in the U.S. Shares of Royal Caribbean are down 1.3 percent, while Carnival (NYSE: CCL) and Norwegian Cruise Line (Nasdaq: NCLH) are both nearly flat. For Carnival investors, many will remember events in recent months with its Triumph and Spendor ships which drove negative PR for the company.
