Whole Foods (WFM) Goes Outside the Norm to Become More Local

May 23, 2013 2:39 PM EDT
We're not sure this happens at every Whole Foods (Nasdaq: WFM) location, but it could be a positive for holders if so.

MLive.com published an article about artists in Detroit, Michigan, being able to paint the outside of a Whole Foods location that is expected to open soon. The location had four large rectangles to paint and about 100 artists were said to apply.

In any case, this type of action immediately gives Whole Foods, a multibillion dollar company, immediate street cred in arguably one of the toughest places in the U.S., which also happens to be writing its own turnaround story. One of the murals has a landscape of Detroit in the background of what many hope will turn into a farming/park area.

Maybe more shoppers will opt to go to the Whole Foods store over another regional chain because they feel more connected. And that's a big positive for a big-name brand.

Shares are up 1.2 percent Thursday.
