Tesla Motors (Nasdaq: TSLA) shares are higher in late trading as the automaker announced it fully repaid a loan from the U.S. Department of Energy. The company said it wired $451.8 million to pay off the facility, including interest.
Notably, Tesla put a little jibe to peers in its press release, stating, "Following this payment, Tesla will be the only American car company to have fully repaid the government."
Ouch.
While Ford (NYSE: F) opted not to receive bailout funds in 2008 - 09, both General Motors (NYSE: GM) and Chrysler did. The U.S. Treasury has been periodically selling-off its stake in GM, but has acknowledged in the past that it didn't expected to break-even on the investment.
Tesla's remark comes following its first profitable quarter after a decade of operations. Shares are up about 0.1 percent.
