Dish Network (DISH) Launches Lobbying Effort Against SoftBank/Sprint (S) Deal

Dish Network Corp. (Nasdaq: DISH) is pulling out all the stops when it comes to lobbying against a SoftBank acquisition of Sprint (NYSE: S).

The Financial Times noted on Wednesday that Dish has launched a campaign against the deal as it also looks to acquire the large U.S. wireless provider. Dish has sent letters to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), started an ad campaign which read "Don't outsource our national security," and even created a website for the cause.

Dish even alluded to a failed 2006 deal for Dubai Ports World to purchase several notable U.S. port locations. That deal also collapsed under heavy lobbying.

FT quoted one American University professor in saying Dish's move might be a little bit of a "stretch." He said, "In an effective lobbying campaign you can’t just run a few ads...These things are rarely effective unless it’s China, and I don’t think they can make a national security case."

Well, Dish is taking the China route. The company noted that SoftBank's ties to Huawei could prove a "risk." SoftBank and Sprint have said they don't plan to use equipment produced by Huawei and agreed to replace equipment made by the Chinese company.

Shares of Dish are down 1.7 percent Wednesday.
