Digitimes reported that orders for display panels sized 4.7- to 5-inches diagonal are seeing strong orders from handset vendors in China.
Tight supplies are expected to remain throughout the second quarter, sources said.
Estimates have high order volume from international vendors continuing through the third quarter this year.
Looking to the latter part of 2013, panel makers are expecting smartphone panel sizes of 5.1- to 6-inches, probably being used on what that markets have dubbed as "phablet" handsets.
Typical panel makers include AU Optronics (NYSE: AUO), Sharp, LG Display (NYSE: LPL), and others.
Given the brief report, it's not clear whether orders are coming in from Samsung, ZTE, and HTC, or whether or not Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) has plans for a larger-display iPhone in the works.
