Dream of Free Wireless Data (Might be) Coming Soon (VZ) (T) (DIS)

May 10, 2013 12:07 PM EDT
Free wireless data?

That's what could happen under one scenario being mulled by Disney's (NYSE: DIS). The WSJ reports that the sports broadcasting giant has been in talks with at least one major U.S. carrier over several options to subsidize data usage.

One scenario has ESPN content, like videos and updates, not count against a monthly data plan. Another proposed scenario might be sharing ad revs with the carriers.

No firm talks are being held and comments haven't been issued by ESPN, AT&T (NYSE: T), Verizon (NYSE: VZ), Sprint (NYSE: S), or T-Mobile (NYSE: TMUS).

Should a deal be reached, it would be a boon for just about everyone. Other media and entertainment content providers might follow suit and bring more rich content to mobile devices, while users won't have to worry about overages. Only carriers might see an issue on missing out on some of the lucrative fees charged for those overages.

Nielsen data showed that wireless users consumed about 0.66-gigabytes (GB) of content per month through the last quarter of 2012, though more and more are watching videos, which typically run a few GBs each.

While Disney and T_Mobile are up on the session, cother arriers are trading lower.
