Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) shares are higher Monday on reports that its Windows Azure software platform has surpassed the $1 billion annual sales mark for the first time ever.
Data comes from Microsoft Server and Tools finance head Curt Anderson and refers to the trailing 12-month time frame.
Traders are keeping an eye on Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) following the news, given that the e-Commerce giant also has a notable presence in the cloud-computing environment with its Amazon Web Services (AWS) unit. AWS draws a couple billion in revenue per year right now, though Amazon hasn't broken down the numbers.
Microsoft is up about 2.5 percent into the close.
