3D Systems (NYSE: DDD), Stratasys (Nasdaq: SSYS), and ExOne (Nasdaq: XONE) are on watch today following reports that a key element in the expansion of 3-D printing got additional backing for expansion.
According to reports, 3-D printing marketplace Shapeways raised $30 million in Series C financing recently. Involved in the investment are names like new Andreessen Horowitz partner Chris Dixon, as well as Union Square Ventures and Lux Capital, AllThingsD noted today.
Shapeways allows product designers to upload 3-D schematics, with customers then being able to have the item printed on one of three materials (plastic, ceramic, or metal) and/or customize the design. The company isn't the only one doing something like this, but it is the largest and most well known. The large investment also hints that 3-D printing isn't something that is going away anytime soon.
Shares of the three companies are up in early trading Tuesday.
