Major 'Skype' Out? Three Months On, BlackBerry (BBRY) Users Still Searching for Key BB10 App

April 18, 2013 2:24 PM EDT
Following the debut of BlackBerry's (Nasdaq: BBRY) new Z10 and Q10 smartphones earlier in the year, Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Skype is still no where to be found.

The WSJ noted Thursday afternoon that Skype won't have a native app for BlackBerry 10, BlackBerry's new mobile operating system, but it would instead be a "tweaked" version of the one available for Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android.

BlackBerry has said that Skype would be available in the "coming weeks," but does the delay mean that the importance of BlackBerry is being lost on developers? Will BlackBerry be able to sell as many devices without a robust catalog of key and popular applications?

The WSJ also cites an email from a Skype worker at Microsoft, which went like this: "Skype has not previously announced a delivery date for the Skype app for BlackBerry 10 devices. We continue to work closely with BlackBerry to provide the best user experience and are on track to deliver a high-quality product on this platform."

Shares of BlackBerry are down 3.2 percent in afternoon trading.
