Google, Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG) is poised to put more pressure on Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) in the global tablet market and may make a big gain this year.

Data from Digitimes has Google and ASUStek potentially shipping 1 million units of the next-generation Nexus 7 tablet in May, leading to shipments of 8 million in 2013.

Google will be holding an annual developer forum in the middle of May, with the next-gen Nexus 7 and Google Glass wearable computers products set to be in the middle of the hoopla.

The Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM)-equipped Nexus 7 will have a higher-resolution display than the previous model and also come wit 3G network capability. Prices are expected to range from $149 to $199 and actual sales will start in June or July of this year.

Apple is also expected to unleash a revamped version of its iPad mini sometime this year. Being a big hit in most southeastern Asia countries, many expect shipments of the iPad mini to be in the millions of units for Apple's most recent reporting quarter. Apple shipped 14 million iPads in total during its last fiscal year, which didn't include the iPad mini given its late debut.

Recent data from IDC pegs shipments of the Apple iPad and iPad mini slipping to below 50 percent for the first time since debut of the iPad tablet in 2010. The research firm sees Apple shipments making up 46 percent of the market this year, from 51 percent last year. Android-equipped devices should move from 42 percent up to 49 percent.

While Google is down about 0.2 percent, Apple is trading over 1.8 percent lower Monday.
