Battle for Air Superiority Continues as Boeing (BA) May Lose Key Wide-Body Order

Boeing (NYSE: BA) is lower in early trading Monday following reports the it might miss out on a large deal from a noted European carrier.

Reuters reports that British Airways (BA) might opt to go with the Airbus A350 aircraft in a deal that could best the $7 billion level. The decision could come as Boeing works to put its 787 Dreamliner fleet back into operation following battery issues that led to a grounding order in several key markets.

What makes the potential order particularly tough in the long history BA and Boeing have. BA has been a long-time buyer of Boeing-specific wide body aircraft, but the latest mews might have BA looking in a new direction.

In total, Reuters speculates that BA might order 20 A350-1000s with a market price of $332 million each.

The A350 would be a counterpart to Boeing's 777 line. Boeing is working to debut a more-efficient version of the jet, called the 777x, but has yet to begin production on the aircraft. Some speculate that a large BA order going to Airbus might speed up the process.

Shares of Boeing are down 0.4 percent Monday morning, paring some of its earlier losses.
