April 4, 2013 3:36 PM EDT
Amid a tepid 2012, funds run by John Paulson had a good first quarter for 2013.

According to WSJ-compiled data from an annual letter, Paulson's Advantage fund is up 2.9 percent through March, bolstered by a 5.6 percent pop last month. Paulson's Advantage Plus fund rose 7.6 percent in March for a 3.6 percent annual gain. Recovery funds saw big gains in insurance investments, moving 14.2 percent higher through the first quarter. Paulson's Credit funds rose 10.4 percent on preferred- and convertible-debt holdings.

Gold hasn't been performing so well. After dropping 18 percent in February, Paulson's gold fund is down another 3.1 percent, for a year-to-date drop of 27.9 percent. Today, gold isn't faring much better; the SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) is down again after a 1.1 percent dip Wednesday.
