Skype Peer 'Viber' Goes Live on WP8 (NOK) (MSFT)

April 2, 2013 2:32 PM EDT
Nokia (NYSE: NOK) is hovering near flat following reports that Skype competitor Viber is now available for the Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system.

The new app will include free text/photo messaging, free HD VoIP calls, location sharing, and group chat. Users on WP8 will be able to pin favorite conversations onto the Home screen via live tile.

Download numbers cited by TechCrunch tell a story: about 2 percent of Viber beta downloads came from WP8-equipped devices last month. That compares with 35 percent for Apple iOS and 58 percent for Google Android.
