Nokia (NYSE: NOK) is still maintaining a strong presence in India, despite competition from the likes of Samsung and recent entry of Apple (Nadaq: AAPL).
The mobile handset market in India rose 20 percent to 221.6 million units last year, from 183.4 million in 2011, CyberMedia Research (CMR) said today. Smartphones accounted for just 15.2 million unit sales, versus 206.4 million units for feature phones.
Nokia maintains the top spot with 21.8 percent market share, while Samsung took 13.7 percent of the market.
Data points to India still being relatively underdeveloped, leading the way for stronger smartphone growth in the country over the next few years. The growth could be a boon for Apple, which is expected to release a lower-cost iPhone sometime this year in order to gain broader access to emerging markets.
Nokia has seen some success with its Asha line of smartphones. The company last reported shipping 86.3 million units, with 9.3 million Asha models adding to the total. By comparison, Nokia's higher end Lumia device shipped about 4.4 million units.
Shares of Nokia are flat early Tuesday.
