Should Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) investors be scared of BlackBerry (Nasdaq: BBRY)?
No. Well, not right now anyway.
According to comments from BlackBerry (Nasdaq: BBRY) CEO Thorsten Heins, "Recent data shows that 55% of the Z10 customers globally are coming from platforms other than Blackberry, more than half." The company also said that about six million BlackBerry smartphones were shipped in Q413, from 6.9 million the prior quarter. Estimated sell-through was 7.9 million units.
Z10 sales weren't specifically broken down, BlackBerry piled all BlackBerry unit sales into one number.
There are two suggestions:
1. At six or even 7.9 million unit sales and 55 percent of Z10s to new customers, that's only a fraction of the well-over 100 million iPhone units Apple sold in its latest fiscal year.
2. Majority sales to customers might suggest that those currently using BlackBerry aren't supper-excited about the new device. In that case, investors in Apple, BlackBerry, and other device makers will have to wait until the next quarter following launch of BlackBerry's QWERTY keyboard-equipped Q10 model.
So, BlackBerry getting back above water is a positive sign, but there are a few areas where investors in other consumer electronics firms shouldn't worry.
