Philippine Air May Place Large 777X Order with Boeing (BA) in Fleet Expansion

Boeing (NYSE: BA) slipped into negative territory Monday following reports that it might get another large order soon, though not for the flagship 787 Dreamliner.

Reuters says that Philippine Airlines (PAL) might be mulling the purchase of 20 Boeing 777X aircraft. The orders will come as PAL plans to take share from domestic rival Cebu Air while starting to offer flights to Europe and the U.S.

With the base 777-200ER starting at $258 million, the order will easily exceed the $5 billion mark. Boeing 777X is expected to be an improved, more-efficient version of the 777 for longer-haul service. PAL President Ramon Ang said the 777X will hold 400 passengers, use a newer engine, shave weight, and have larger wings than current models.

PAL plans to expand its fleet from 40 to about 100 aircraft over the next five to seven years.

In the middle of March, it was announced that Ryanair placed at $15.6 billion order with Boeing. Delta Air (NYSE: DAL) may also be planning a large purchase soon.
