Qualcomm (QCOM) Steals Key Spot from NVIDIA (NVDA) in Next-Gen Nexus 7 Tablet (GOOG)

Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM) has been making some strong moves in mobile lately, what with getting a key spot in Samsung's new Galaxy S IV smartphone among its latest achievements.

Along with ASUStek, Qualcomm might also have another strong role in providing processing power to Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) second-generation Nexus 7 tablet. Qualcomm would be stealing the honor from NVIDIA (Nasdaq: NVDA) which provided its Tegra 3 processor for Google's original Nexus 7.

Digitimes noted that processor shipments would total about eight million units for the new Nexus 7. That compares with six million Tegra 3 chips shipped last year for the first-generation Nexus 7 tablet.

Price wasn't a determining factor in the switch, sources said. Rather, it was Qualcomm's chip has a better communications chip integration process.

NVIDIA recently release its Tegra 4 chip with integrated 4G LTE chip, but with the Nexus 7 expected to come out in May, the time frame wasn't favorable for NVIDIA.

Shares of Qualcomm are up early, while NVIDIA is slightly lower Tuesday.
