How big of a deal is Instagram?
According to a message posted on Twitter today by its offical account, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) is really pulling for Instagram to create an app for Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows Phone 8 mobile platform. The site can be seen here in all its multicolored, boxy glory.
Nokia might be pushing for the move given that its probably trying to show off its PureView camera feature.
Last year, ahead of its much-hyped IPO, Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) announced plans to acquire Instagram for $1 billion. Though the initial reaction was shock given CEO Mark Zuckerberg didn't do too much "company consulting" ahead of the deal, much of that has been worn away and Instagram is still chugging along.
With current app selection for WP8 currently lagging both Android and iOS, its clear that additions of more-popular apps will make a platform more attractive to potential users. And that's a benefit both Nokia and Microsoft investors would like to enjoy.
In that sense, Instagram is a huge deal.
Shares of Nokia are up 1.6 percent Thursday.
