Traders are keeping an eye on the S&P 500 (NYSE: SPY) today.
Following the Doe Jones Industrial Average's recent surge to new all-time high levels, the S&P is next in line to reach the mark. The highest that the S&P ever finished was 1,565.15 hit on October 9, 2007. Currently, the index is trading around 1,559 or so.
What makes the S&P record a little more remarkable is that its a collection of the top 500 companies in any industry, versus a much more svelte 30 for the Dow Jones index. The S&P is also market-value weighted, versus price-weighted for the Dow and Nasdaq.
Overall, all three U.S. markets are ticking higher on the session, each up about one-third of a percent.
