Demand for Traditional iPad Sees Staggering Drop in January; iPad Mini Still Strong (AAPL)

One telling sign for Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) shareholders might be found in LG Display (NYSE: LPL).

According to Digitimes on Tuesday, shipments of panel's used in Apple's 9.7-inch iPad fell from six million in December, down to 600,000 units in January 2013. Industry sources pointed to increasing demand for the iPad mini as well as other low-priced tablet PCs.

January is also a typical month for slowdowns in the industry, Digitimes noted.

LG Display is planning on a jump in panel orders during the second quarter, when Apple starts planning for a third-quarter launch of the next generation iPad.

Shipments of iPad mini panels were about 3.5 million to four million in December and January. This shipments made up the bulk of the five million panels shipped by the company in the period.

It appears that demand preference for the iPad mini isn't likely to slow down either. Research outfit WitsView sees about 35 percent of total tablet sales at Apple being the traditional iPad through the first-half of 2013, with the iPad mini making up the bulk.

Into the open Tuesday, Apple is indicated higher.
