Ruckus Wireless (NYSE: RKUS) and Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) are mixed on the session amid reports that the duo might be cahoots for a new Wifi project in Africa.
GigaOm stated late Thursday that Ruckus would supply access points for a 17 country build-out by Airtel Africe. Alcatel will be providing backbone data transport and backhaul network on the project.
None of the companies commented on the speculation. GigaOm states that Airtel might be using Wifi to supplement 3G/4G replacement, generally putting up the 'hotspots' in places like hotels, airports, shopping districts, and other heavily trafficked outdoor locations.
The deal is a big one for Ruckus, though it was also recent awarded a contract with Japan's KDDI.
Alcatel is down about 2 percent today while Ruckus is up over 11 percent.
