Boeing (NYSE: BA) is in positive territory Thursday following earlier reports that the commercial aircraft giant is working on a potential battery fix which could see its key 787 Dreamliner offering back in the skies by March.
According to the WSJ, the proposed solution would be temporary and allow 787s to operate while Boeing engineers work toward a better solution. Specifically, separation between lithium-ion cells in the batteries may be increased to reduce potential hazards from heat and fire spreading. Another solution for now would be to keep the batteries more rigid, preventing them from shifting under certain conditions, reducing the potential to interfere with electronics, noted the report.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said recently that any temporary fixed must improve warning time if a battery malfunctions along with being better at mitigating dangers should any part of the system fail.
Batteries for the 787 are being produced by GS Yuasa Corp of Japan.
Shares are up 0.5 percent Thursday.
