Microsoft (MSFT) Plans WP8 Reference Design in China Expansion Effort (NOK) (AAPL)

Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) wants for for its Windows Phone platform. Much more.

According to Digitimes, Microsoft is working with Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM) to produce a Windows Phone 8 reference design in an effort to attract more smartphone makers. The goal is to get more entry-level and midrange devices out there running WP8, which will be key for the expansion into China and other emerging markets.

The reference design is expected to drop in the middle of 2013, with smartphones based around the operating system coming out shortly thereafter.

Names like ZTE, Lenovo, and Huawei are already on board for WP8 smartphones.

Two key points from this information:
  1. The news reinforces the need for Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) to produce a low-cost iPhone, which will likely crimp margins as volume rises. The company should also make one rather quick if it plans to strike while the 'iPhone iron' is still hot; and

  2. Will Nokia (NYSE: NOK) see a hit as more competitors begin producing low-cost WP8 devices?

In any case, Microsoft simply wants to get WP8 into as many has as possible, much like how Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) wants as many people to use Android as possible.

Microsoft and Nokia are lower at the start Friday.
