Not that Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) isn't having a rough enough day already, but there is some iPad speculation floating around.
Digitimes reports today that first-quarter 2013 production of the 9.7-inch display iPad will drop about 40 percent. Though the quarter is traditionally the slowest for Apple is terms of iPad sales, heightened demand for the smaller iPad mini is also hitting numbers.
In response, Sharp is planning to halt panel production in one of its northern Taiwan plants, while panel makers TPK and Winitek will also see a drop in revs for the quarter.
The iPad mini is said to have a higher bill of materials (BOM) than the larger version, meaning that Apple might see further margin erosion as demand continues to be robust.
Despite the sour news of the current iPad, there is a bright spot on the horizon: Sharp may also be cutting production on the current iPad panels in order to begin testing/production of the next-generation panels. Apple is said to also be looking at LG Display (NYSE: LPL) and Samsung as potential suppliers.
